Windows 8 is doing something strange... Help :(

Hey LTT Forums,

So recently I have been having some problems with Windows 8 on my custom desktop PC setup and today it has gotten worse.

For later reference: I'm using an ASRock Z97 Extreme 4, version "Z97 Extreme4 P1.30"

EDIT:

I have a 2TB Seagate Barracuda with all my files on it like games, software etc then I have as Samsung 850 EVO 250GB with Windows installed on it.

From the start:

I went on holiday, and when I came back and turned my computer on, it said something about my copy of windows being used on another device and that I had to "reactivate" windows or verify or something. I tried doing that through a phoneline as I couldn't find my windows disk/package (which I will keep looking for). Because I couldn't come to a solution whether I could reactivate it all I had to do was lick the "X" button to close at the top right corner, and it was gone. So I thought it might be fine.

This went on for 2 days until this morning when I turned my computer on and gave me the message:

"Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

So, I pressed keys, nothing happened. I decided then to open the BIOS through clicking F2 after restarting my computer and it opened just fine. I go to the boot menu and and select "Boot Option 1" and it comes up with the following:

"AHCI P1: ST2000DM001-1ER164"

and below it:

"Disabled"

Now I'm not sure what any of this means, all I know is I can't boot up my computer and Windows appearing. Would this be linked to the issue of "reactivating" my windows version? Also does this mean that some how my windows is being used on another device I'm unaware of?

Please leave a reply if you know any solution to this. I'm really not sure where to go with all of this.

Looks like another person is using your Windows 8 license. As for your hard drive, it may be dead.

But how would someone else get my Windows 8 license? :|

Also how do I know if that's my hard drive or my SSD I have windows on?  (Forgot to say that in original post, I'l edit)

I assumed so because you said:

ST2000DM001-1ER164 is seagate hard drive.

Oh ok, so do SSDs just die sometimes? Could it be a coincidence that it happened just as I needed to "reactivate" my windows version?

If it's ancient, yes. They have limited cycles. What ssd do you have?

Samsung 850 EVO 250GB, bought around 2 years ago.

Samsung's tlc memory lasts for around 1000 write cycles. That's 250,000 GB (244 TB) of writes that your ssd will need before dooms day. 2 years ago means that if you were to write til 1000 write cycles, it would be 1.88 GB a day.

I'm not sure I understand what this means, sorry..

So just coincidence that it happened after this verification / reactivation stuff? This is pretty damn annoying, you think there's any quick solution I can do?

A dead ssd is a dead ssd, you might have luck trying to recover it from some data recovery center, but the quickest solution is probably buying a new ssd.
