I'd look at the Elitebook 8470P or 8470W, both good laptops, strangely there isn't as much demand for them as there is for the equivalent ThinkPads and Latitudes, so you can buy them for very cheap.

Keep in mind, the 8470 isn't light, plus it is 14"es, which may be larger than what you want. I believe there are similar Elitebooks in a smaller form factor, but I don't know what they are called, nor have I used them.

I second the Elitebook comment.

I bought an Elitebook 8770w back in April to replace a POS Sony Vaio and it's been a great computer. I've put some upgrades into it and it runs fantastically. Sure, it's a bit bulkier, but that's something that I like about it. It feels solid.

If you want a good computer at a decent price, the Elitebooks are a great option. They're better machines then what you're going to find at a store like Wal-Mart or Best Buy in the same price range.
