so i happened to wander over to the Intel ARK website, and looked up my CPU. i noticed that the max temp is set to 71c (160f). so is that the point where it starts thermal throttling, or will it do much more than throttle back if it ever gets that hot?

Hello! In order for us to tailor support for your question, may we please know that of your CPU and cooler?

I once did the unthinkable, back many headphones ago...

I split an audio split, again

T case(the temp listed on ark) is not the same as the temp you read in software, it is the max temp reading at the heat spreader. when you measure your temp via bios or software it is reading it from a sensor very close to the cores of your cpu and because of this gives a higher reading. your i5 6500 will go 95+ deg before it will start to throttle, but i would not run my cpu that hot, below 80 is a good and 85 although not ideal is acceptable.

it is a 6th gen intel i-5 6500. according to the specs in ark, that is what it says. i thought it was 100c before  it would throttle back to idle as well. maybe i am misunderstanding something?

oh, i am just running the stock cooler. so far, the hottest it has gotten is 37c.
