I have an HP G62 and it used to overheat. It used to shut down unexpectedly. I opened it up and reapplied thermal paste on the cpu. The laptop was ok for a week or so. Now it shuts down randomly even when i am in the bios. Things i have done to eliminate potential problems:

Tried with power adapter on and battery on

Tried with power and no battery

Tried with Battery and no cable

Nothing changed... what could it be?

does your bios show temperatures? did you clean out the heatsink fans? how long does it stay on before shutting down?

also, please provide hardware specifications for your model of HP G62

Have you tried to perform a sudden temporary interrupt of the electricity flow to your computational device followed by a re-initialization procedure of the central processing unit and associated components?

It may be that the TIM application was not successful, I have seen that with MacBooks before; you have just put it back together to find out its still not working. I would say reapply the thermal paste but put a line of TIM along the die and then spread it out, you want a thin even layer over the CPU. Make sure that the heatsink is down tight to minimise air gaps. Make sure that the fan is actually spinning too, the fins of the heatsink aren't fluffed up; a fan error will cause it to shutdown.

It may be that the laptop was damaged from the overheating, although its rare on new(er) laptops. Google/bing/askjeevs how to reset the CMOS on that laptop too, it might help.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?
