Hello everybody,

recently, I bought a RT-AC66U router from Asus. I didn't fiddle around with the settings, left everything default (except from some Port forwarding and WAN static IP).

Problem is that at exactly the same time each day, network becomes slow. Now, I know that this is the Peak hour of people going online but I wonder why my local network (I've got an server in it) also becomes slow. RDP to my virtual machine on the local server becomes terrible slow, also is file copying (normal transfer rate wifi is about 6MB/s, at those peak hours only 1MB/s).
If I do connect directly with my server (Gigiabit switch), speeds are as high as 100MB/s as they should be. (Never reached those speeds through my router when using cable).

Anybody any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Have you registered your server with a domain name or are you using it completely locally. You are accessing the Server via wireless so you will get pretty close gigabit speeds locally but that's in ideal conditions. With wireless AC you are going to get about 400-500mbps realistically. And RDP only requires 10mbps for a fluent experience.

It is used on the web for several services and so it is registered with a domain name (a free .tk domain if that could matter). What I don't understand is that my local network becomes slow. I know I can get 400-500mbps realistically with wifi but why isn't this al the time? It is a local network! It should always have full potential as nobody could possibly completely pin down my network from the outside (ISP Down is 30mbps, Up is 4mbps)

So your wireless becomes slow during certain times during the day? Are you on the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band? If it's the 2.4GHz band, then you might be getting lots of interference from your neighbors. Changing to the 5GHz band and/or a channel that's not prone to interference from your neighbors should help if that's the issue.

Going to check my whole network as my LAN network should be able to copy at speeds of 1Gbps and it only does at 100Mbps....

Thanks for the answers!

Just make sure that you don't:

1) Confuse MBps and Mbps (they are different things)

2) Don't run into a HDD bottleneck and mistake it for a network bottleneck.
