Ok, so I was upgrading my old Asus X550J to an SSD. So, i took the drive out of the package, slapped it in the drive bay, replacing the old HDD. Then, I plugged in my bootable media, and it wouldnt let me boot from it. It shows in the BIOS that there is nothing I could boot from.

My SSD is the samgsung 850 Evo if that means anything to my problem.

This is my first time upgrading a laptop, so please tell me my noob mistake.

What exactly is your "bootable media"?

Can you connect it to another computer?  You may have to initialize it as GPT by opening Disk Management in Windows.

You'll need to initialize it through command line.  Instead of installing, go to Troubleshoot and open Command Prompt.  Then follow the directions here.  Use Method 1 and start at the line that says " So, here you should typelist disk first"

Assuming you can install it after that, it will reboot several times.  After the first time it reboots you'll need to change it back to UEFI.

Your SSD probably isn't connected properly then.

Well you're connecting it right. My best suggestion is that you buy an enclosure.  Put the SSD in it, boot up your hard drive (remember to switch back to UEFI mode first), open up Disk Management, and initialize the drive as GPT.  If that doesn't work, it means the drive is bad.

I know it sucks to buy more stuff, but on the bright side, you can use that enclosure on your old hard drive.  That will let you use it as a backup.

That sucks.  Maybe you can sell the enclosure to someone when you're done with it.  You'll have to get access to someone else's computer to initialize it.  It only takes 2 seconds.
