What to upgrade next?

Go to solution Solved by aGl1tch,

Alright it's decided then - CPU and cooler to an i7 and a Hyper 212.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate it!

So I'm currently working a lot and saving up some money and I'm thinking about upgrading my PC.  I don't feel like there are any major performance/usage issues but .. well there's always room for some improvement. I'll get the specs out of the way first:

- Pentium G4560 (stock cooler)

- 8 GB of budget RAM

- Gigabyte B150M-D3H

- Zotac GTX 1050 Mini 2GB

- 128GB Kingston SSD + an old 500GB WD HDD

- Corsair CX450M

- a couple of 120mm beQuiet fans I got on sale

- CoolerMaster MasterBox Lite 3

- 24" 120Hz 1080p Monitor

So as I mentioned, I don't have any real issues in terms of performance dips in-game or during normal usage. But I do have some nitpicks:

- the stock cooler is loud (but buying an aftermarket cooler for a Pentium ..?)

- every now and then when alt-tabbing in between applications you can feel the PC struggling to keep up (minor freezes, reloading windows/applications, background video/audio stutter)

- CPU intensive games run poorly (most recently Black Desert Online)

- kinda worried about how long the HDD is going to last, I've had it for a couple of years now

- sometimes the PSU fan will start rattling until it's 'bumped' back into place (seems to be a common issue with this model)

- sometimes I'd like to have a second monitor, but all of the above things are more important

What would you guys say? Is there something that you would say is a must upgrade? I've read somewhere that the Corsair PSU I have is really crappy and that I should replace that asap, but I'm really not sure.

Thanks in advance, any tips are appreciated!

Not even to an i5? Would an i3 really be that much of an improvement?

You PSU is fine for now.

I would definitely upgrade the CPU to an i5 at least depending on your budget.

Then after that I would focus on getting an SSD and or a RAM upgrade to 16GB.

CPU: i7-12700KF Grill Plate Edition // MOBO: Asus Z690-PLUS WIFI D4 // RAM: 16GB G.Skill Trident Z 3200MHz CL14

GPU: MSI GTX 1080 FE // PSU: Corsair RM750i // CASE: Thermaltake Core X71 // BOOT: Samsung Evo 960 500GB

STORAGE: WD PC SN530 512GB + Samsung Evo 860 500GB // COOLING: Full custom loop // DISPLAY: LG 34UC89G-B

I would upgrade the HDD first, its a little small and old so anything like a 1 tb or 2 will do fine (its cheap too so y not?)

As for CPU upgrade, I would get a used 6700, or an i5 (but mined you, an i5 is starting to show its age and you will upgrade this sooner than you think)

More ram will help stutters and such, especially with games like GTA V or any open world titles

Well that's honestly not a huge upgrade considering that pentium is really good on its two cores and 4 threads.

An upgrade worth buying in that case would be an i5 for an actual increase in performance.

If you have no problems with the HDD you're fine! No noises or stutters? OK.

This is overall a pretty budget build, I'd say upgrade the things you find necessary first! Like the obvious CPU bottleneck you mentioned, then CPU would be my recommendation.

An i5 would do you great in this build, like the i5 7500.

Then get a beefier GPU later on. 8GB RAM is enough for now.

300~ ish for now

OP, I would check this out like NOW:

i7 6700 for $230, 99.9% seller rating, used and more than 10 available:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i7-6700-SR2L2-3-40GHz-Quad-Core-CPU-CPU043-/182602275639?hash=item2a83f19b37:g:EFcAAOSw7GRZJa0n

This would be a really good upgrade for now, it wil llast for at least 4 to 5 years, and you can also fit a new HDD into your 300 ish budget

So the first thing will be the CPU then - ideally an i7 6700 if I can find one at a good price (in my region ^^). Then either the HDD or the PSU, depending on what starts failing first. After that, I can do the more 'premium' stuff like more RAM and a better GPU.

Would that be reasonable?

Might be a bit tight on your budget but I think an I7 would be a good investment.

Yeah just looked at my retailer of choice, it's 310€ there which is fine. What would you recommend cooler-wise? Will a 212 Evo be sufficient?
