Removing memory chips from dimms

As the title says, can I remove memory chips from a ram stick?

I do a collection of PCs and I want ddr3 triple channel 3x3 gb, in a x58 motherboard and a i7 930. Will it work?

the controller is configured to work with all the chips

You probably COULD, but it would destroy the RAM in the process. There's no practical way/reason to do this.

DDR2 isn't compatible with boards that support DDR3.

You can't use DDR2 with DDR3 motherboards. It's NOT worth it at all, because you will quickly find out that you cannot do what you have envisioned, especially without the proper tools/equipment. That's really just a waste of money (and DDR2 for me).

It won't work. The controller is there for a reason and unless you have an intimate knowledge of how its built, the traces in the multi layer PCB used and overall schematic of the DIMM, it'll just end up being a stick of mutilated ram that will only serve one purpose: DIMM filler with no electrical functionality.

Also, DDR2 has a different pinout to DDR3, a different notch location and a different controller.

That isn't entirely true. There used to be DDR2 & DDR3 compatible motherboards back in the day. There would be something like 2-4xDDR2 DIMMs and 2-4xDDR3 DIMMs. You could use either depending on the CPU (ofc you couldn't use them both at the same time. that'd be just silly). Gigabyte did it on the P35C-DS3R

I said that ddr2 is my ginny pig. I know ddr2 and ddr3 aren't compatible.

Even so, you won't be able to do anything with any of it once you're done. This is just a waste of time, money and effort.

I have a few kits of triple-channel Dominator GT 1866 C7 with Elpida Hyper ICs 3x2GB. Might be a waste but if you want to spend some monies...
