Help, Temps are crazy.

Go to solution Solved by LogicalDrm,

Well, let me list the issues here:

  1. OC. Voltages. Those do more for temps than clock speeds. They will play factor.
  2. Cooler. Like you said, its not wonderful. In fact, there are cheaper air coolers which are better.
  3. Ambient. Whenever you see review about temps, they are made in 20-25C room. Every degree ambient goes up, so does temps for CPU/GPU. 90C equals 70-75C on cooler ambient temps.
  4. Prime95. That thing can cause unrealistic temps. Try with some other stress test, like Aida64 or OCCT.

So in all, temps aren't that odd. Just normal for the combination.

Hi, I'm on the following.

Processor: i5 7600k

GPU: EVGA Geforce GTX 1080 Superclocked

MoBo: MSI SLI Plus

RAM: Corsasir LPX 16 GB (2x8 Kit) 3000 Mhz

Storage: SSD and HHD Combo

Case: NZXT S340 Elite

Aside from the PSU Fan I have four fans, 2 pushing in and 2 pushing out.

My CPU cooler is the 120 mm water cooled H60 from Corsair. This one is one of the fans pushing in.

I did a modest overclock using MSI's own OC Genie from the BIOS, I'm not super into overclocking so I just wanted a nice stable overclock, I'm also aware that an H60 isn't exactly the best water cooler out there so I thought the 4.5 Mhz overclock that OC Genie put me at would be fine. I know that its not uncommon for i5s and i7s on Kabylake to reach 5.0 and beyond so what happened next worried me. I ran a stress test using Prime 95 and the temps reached like 90 degrees Celsius which worried me so I ended the test. I'm from a tropical country and so my ambient temperature usually sits at around 45 degrees Celsius. Does anyone have any idea why my temps jumped so high? My working theory is that the contact between the H60's CPU block and the processor itself is not so great because I only used the pre-applied thermal paste, I wanted to solicit opinions though before taking it apart. Maybe, since the H60s are a bit older now, the thermal paste dried up. My second theory is that OC Genie was designed for MSI Gaming Mobos and so it might set the voltage too high or something. My temperature monitoring software for CPU temps Core Temp 1.7.

For anyone who might think its a factor, the GPU is not overclocked, at least not from what EVGA shipped it with. The H60 is mounted on the front sucking air in from outside the case.

This was my first build, so I'm not exactly sure what else could be the problem. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Never auto OC. Never. Put it back, and learn if you plan on doing it.

The H60 never really was a great AIO. They always run hot. Auto overclocking utilities will always over-estimate voltages, and sometimes even to dangerous extents. In addition, P95 took some flak a while back due to hammering a specific instruction set which caused some Intel chips to overvolt themselves, and overheat. AVX, I believe.

I'm not terrible familiar with Intel chips, but from what I've seen, I doubt you'll get anywhere near 5Ghz on an H60. Either way, it's not a smart idea to just kick it up as high as you can without testing lower settings first. Especially when you aren't the one controlling the settings.

90C on prime is not that uncommon for an overclocked CPU. I would recommend that you turn off the automatic OC and do it manually, because the motherboard could be raising the voltage higher than needed which leads to higher temp. Put it at 4.5ghz, then start playing with voltage and find the lowest it can go without the computer becoming unstable. Also try more tests like AIDA 64 or Realbench. Remember, it's not the clock that makes the CPU hot, it's the voltage. You need to find the balance between the performance you want and the thermals.

45C is very normal for a tropical country with an overclocked CPU. Ambient room temperature plays a big role.

Thanks, I ran Aida64 instead of prime 95 and its looking like the temps are stable at around 75- 79 degrees Celsius which is a lot better than what I was seeing on Prime95. Will fiddle with the voltage when I get the chance.
