There's many ways of removing rust, like baking soda or vinegar or salt & lemon juice. Or chemical solutions you can buy in most DIY stores.

Sandpaper is definitely an option, but a brillo pad or some scrunched up aluminium foil might do the trick as well.

 

Paint would be the best way to keep moisture away, but you could also just rub it with some oil if you don't feel like painting your headphones.
