HP Boot From Usb

Go to solution Solved by Jonathantje,

We got Windows 10 installed using a DVD, thanks for the help!

Introduction

My dad needed a new pc, so I decided to give him my old pc. The pc was full of virusus so I decided to do a reset.

The pc was running windows 7 when I bought it and it is running windows 10 now. I am able to access the bios.

The pc is a HP p6340nl.

The problem

I can't find a way to boot from an usb in the bios. I can only select floppy disc, cd/dvd, disk and network, but not usb.

I searched google and it told me to go to the advanced section in the bios and enable legacy mode. I can't find a setting called legacy mode.

Other tutorials told me to press F9 and select the usb there. Pressing F9 doesn't do anything.

How do I boot from usb?

If you need any other information, please ask.

I've run into times with this era of pre-builts where even if I have all the bios settings correct and it detects the usb as a boot device I still have to reload windows from a disk...don't know why but yeah it's annoying.

Did HP say anything about the issue or is it out of warranty?

It has been out of warranty for a few years. I could still try to ask them?

I currently don't have a windows 10 cd or a cd available which I can burn. I will try to see if I can find one.

Any other ideas?

Can you do a system reset from the settings menu in 10? I'd just tell it to delete all the data and programs and reinstall windows.

Otherwise you may need a dvd to do a fresh install.

It's full of virusus, I tried it but I can barely even get in the settings menu.

I got in the settings menu, and then when I clicked reset it said it failed.

I guess I will try getting a dvd somewhere and burning it.

Do you have the USB plugged in when you are in the bios searching for it?

Can you test your USB on your new machine to see if your new one boots from the USB? Otherwise, the USB simply may not be bootable, and happens. (In this case you either need to get a new USB that IS bootable or find a CD/DVD to boot from)

What do you mean with advanced statup boot? Safe mode?

The problem is not that the usb is not bootable, there isn't even an option to boot from usb.

I tried to see if the usb is listed under drives, but it is not listed there either

Can you test the USB on your new computer is all I'm asking, to make sure that it's a valid/working USB that is capable of being booted from.

I actually used this USB when installing this computer, so I am pretty sure it is working.

It is the USB that was included with my windows 10 license key from my new computer

(EDIT: I also tried manually creating a recovery usb with my own usb stick, didn't work either)

not safe mode exactly, it's under the reset pc function in the recovery tab and allows you to do admin features (including safe mode) before windows loads.

make sure you're using usb 2.0, make sure secure boot is disabled, make sure uefi boot is disabled(legacy enabled), and try again.

i had a similar issue recently

Try using F2 or use this website (https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-p6300-desktop-pc-series/4079858/model/4119713/troubleshooting).

i have had experience with HP computer and have found that upon turning the computer on press esc and it will bring you to a menu.  from there you can press f11 and it should boot you into a screen that might allow you to factory reset the laptop back to the factory windows 7 image.  if this does not work then you might have to turn off fast turn on under settings.  hold the Windows key and press r then type in control and select ok from there go to hardware and sound and select power options from there on the left side of the window select change what the pc does when you press the power button and from there you might have to click change settings that are currently unavaiable and then turn off fast turn on.  Fast turn on basically logs you off and then hibernates the machine.  when an HP machine is in hibernation it blocks you from access the BIOS, one time boot menu, etc.
