Posted April 16, 2017 I'm just wondering which one of these headsets are worth it? I know that the only feature you get with the Cloud II is Dolby Surround Sound, but does that change anything during gaming? I got the Cloud II's simply because they were a generation newer and on sale. They're pretty legit, I don't really notice the Dolby - I think it's mostly a gimmick. But the sound quality overall is pretty good so all in all I'd get the II's. Can the Cloud II's compare to something like an Audio Technica ATH M50x? Posted April 16, 2017 Get the standard clouds. The USB dongle that comes with the Cloud II's doesn't sound good, and "surround sound" isn't going to help you (even if you needed it, Razer's surround sound software is free and works with any headphones). Refurbished Clouds are also incredibly cheap: http://www.ebay.com/itm/HyperX-Cloud-Core-Pro-Gaming-Headset-for-PC-Xbox-One-PS4-RE-CERTIFIED-/172509689710 Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/767046-hyper-x-cloud-or-hyper-x-cloud-iis/#findComment-9686329 Share on other sites
 Posted April 16, 2017 The dolby surround from the included dac is pretty garbage, and in many games just obfuscates sound way too much, making almost everything sound as though its about 3 ft behind you. As long as they're the same price, i would still get the cloud IIs though, simply because its a generation newer, and in the few occasions where the simulated surround is nice, it would be beneficial to have. The Cloud II's and Cloud Cores are the exact same headphones, just with different accessories. 4 minutes ago, bazookaman36 said: Can the Cloud II's compare to something like an Audio Technica ATH M50x? I liked the Takstar Pro 80's (OEM Clouds) more than the M50's in an AB test. That has more to do with sound signature than quality; although the M50's felt technically better (better transients, more bass extension), the Takstars have a wider soundstage and a less recessed midrange with a slightly rolled-off treble instead of the M50's sibilance. I fatigued with the M50's; I didn't with the Clouds. If he's buying new though, and they're the same price, then what's the problem with getting a slightly more updated dac? The included one is well, a standard cheap dac, but like I said having that SS in the few situations it won't just make things worse, then it would be nice to have. Onboard audio is better than the included dongle in almost all cases. It's very low quality. Better to never get it so you're never tempted to use the thing. Razer's surround sound is also free here for any headphones: https://www.razerzone.com/surround In other words, you're paying extra for the option of worse audio with the Cloud II's. Just... one issue... The included cable on the cloud without the dac is very short, only a few feet long, so often running it to your rear io isn't an option, and the front audio connector can often introduce static. That and... it requires a 4 pole audio connection for the integrated microphone to function, and many front panel audio ports are only 3 pole, same goes often for motherboard rear io. You'd more than likely have to buy an adapter and extension if you planned to use it without the included dac. The Cloud I's also have a similar extension cable. I just needed a decent pair so I wouldn't bug my wife on my late night gaming sessions, and these so far have fit the bill.
