So I am looking at this 1080p 144hz monitor https://www.amazon.com/Asus-VG248QE-24-inch-Ergonomic-Back-lit/dp/B00B2HH7G0?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0 Its looking great. My only question is that the people on the reviews are saying I need to buy my own DVI-D  dual link cable because it doesn't come with one and it is needed to run at above 60hz. My only question is why DVI? Maybe I'm super wrong about something but I'm pretty sure DVI is that old cable with VGA so why not use HDMI? Before everyone starts freaking out I did look at the thread at the top of the Displays forum all about the display cables. I saw that on DVI it could do 1080p at 144hz. So I was like ooo okay so DVI is the only cable that can do 144hz, but then I look at HDMI and on 1.3 and 1.4 it can run 1080p at 144hz. Is it just that the monitor/gpu doesn't support HDMI 1.3 or 4?. This is all very weird to me so thanks in advance for the help xD .

Ok I heave exactly the same display x3 it comes with DVI-D dual link cable and DVI-D/I cable supports 144Hz no problem . Personally I recommend you sing Display port as it has all the HDMI bonus and DVI-D . Supports 144hz and sound . But if you dot care about sound the display wiil came with the nessesery DVI cable

to run your 144 hz 1080 p . Great monitor strongly recommend for gaming especially fps as it has 1 m/s delay and all u ever wanted

HDMI is only for 60hz as it is mostly on TV not gaming machine

Not true, you can do 120hz and 144 hz on it as well.

DVI-A is analog, DVI-I has one digital and one analog connector, and DVI-D is digital. Most likely this is DVI-D, so it's not analog.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Short answer is, some monitors do not accept >60 Hz signals over HDMI. This is not a limitation of HDMI itself, it is just a limitation of those particular products. The guide does have a section specifically about connecting to 120+ Hz monitors, this is explained in more detail there:

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/729232-guide-to-display-cables-adapters-v2/?section=120Hz_displays

Just for clarity HDMI itself is not limited to 60 Hz and never has been, even since version 1.0.
