Microsoft broke updates in order to get people to upgrade to 10.

You either need to let it sit for HOURS(ive seen it take 10 mins or fucking weeks) or use a program called WSUSOffine.

Its simple and you can figure out how to use it.

If you can't get it to update, you might have to move to windows 10. At least then you can download the Media Creation Tool and force it to update (but it usually does it by itself). I tried to get my vista machine to update, but like @Jrock said, MS has messed up its update software.

try getting KB3083710 and KB3102810 updates seperately and install them. There were 2 or 3 more for a smooth windows 7 update.

Else you could head over to Dr. Windows Update Packs for Windows 7 download and run.

Aunt Edith says: as explanation to that behavior, MS changed the way they do updates quite a few times in the last years, every time you needed to update windows update as well to keep it working.

So when updating a fresh 7, you need a hell of a time. Or just use those WSUS Offline or update packs like Dr. Windows to get around that things.

kinda lame for them to stop it all together instead of stopping new updates.

They didn't stop the updates. They put in some code or something to make it take FOREVER to find and install new ones.

Not really, they made some really big changes to their update system.

Earlier with Win XP there were cumulative updates. With Win 7 they were gone you Windows updated every single update on its own. There are a crapload of single updates that Win 7/2008 Server need to get up to date. Way more than the 500+ a fresh installation suckles from MS. You can see them all when you set up a WSUS Server =)

After quite some time and an angry community telling MS to go back to cumulative updates, so you don't need to do single update after single update, they worked on changing that. It took 3-4 updates to the Windows Update system, not every time the update "broke" but you need 2 Patches for windows update that it works with todays updates.

To speed Win 7/2008 Updates up, there are a handfull of updates, when installed separately, speed up the update process big time.

I did that a little over a year ago, and I'm really sorry, but I haven't got the link to that saved that time.

Else you need to keep your system running for a while. 1-2 days.

The CPU usage may spike as well during that wait.

I believe Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 have this issue. It literally takes hours.

When you see the "update and restart" option when clicking near the power button/the start menu, that's when you know it's working on the updates and you go from there. The Windows update window I believe has issues.
