System Powers On for Half a Second

Go to solution Solved by Fluffyvoir,

Just ended up buying a new mobo, and that solved it. Thanks everyone for the help regardless, and apologies for the late reply.

Hello all. So I have a system that I'm just now getting around to diagnosing. Been without a desktop for a couple months now. My system stopped working suddenly, as the title states, when I hit the power button, the LEDs turn on and fans start, then within 2 seconds it immediately shuts off. No beep codes, no display. The power button on the motherboard itself stays lit the entire time though. I don't have a repair shop near me or any spare parts lying around to test with, and I don't want to just buy random parts until I find the problem. Is this the sign of a dead motherboard, or CPU, or what?

My parts include:

CPU: Intel i7-4770K

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H

Power Supply: Corsair HX1000i

RAM: G Skill Sniper Series 4 x 4 GB

Case: Rosewill Challenger U3

Sounds like something might be shorting it out. I'd recommend taking the motherboard completely out of the case and trying that. If that doesn't work, keep the motherboard out of the case (On something rubber or plastic) and take out the Power button connector and instead try a screw driver. If those all don't work, it would be narrowed down to a PSU or motherboard problem. It wouldn't be a CPU problem as even without a CPU, a computer will still power on and not turn off straight away. Do some trial and error, take out ram, take out the CPU even just to try until you're down to just a bare motherboard and PSU. If it still doesnt work, it's one of those two. (i dont think it would be tho)

sounds like a faulty PSU or a dead board. any beeps without any rams in it?

Took everything out, including the board from the case. All I have is the power supply, which is plugged into the motherboard, both outside the case. Same problem, no progress at all, no beeps either.

think you should keep the cpu in it though. was that how you did it? if there's no beep without ram then i think it's probably the board. although i couldnt find a speaker on the board's manual..:S

Tried both with the CPU in, and CPU out, same result each time. About to just buy a new mobo, Gigabyte is not getting back to me.

aint shit gonna happen if the cpu isnt plugged in..

plug the cpu back in, plug in motherboard and cpu power. test with a single stick of ram.

This, test each stick of RAM as a fault stick can cause this problem, if that is still not working, I would lean towards the PSU being the issue.
