dual channel help

Go to solution Solved by Cyracus,

you can use speccy to get the brand and model of your ram https://www.piriform.com/speccy

So i have a computer with a single 8 gig stick of ddr3, and i want to put another stick in there as i have been playing starbound, which eats up a ton of ram. However, ive heard that if you want dual channel ram you have to have it be the same brand and size. This is troublesome because I bought the pc from a store and it never said what brand it has. Is this true or can i throw any old stick in and have it run fine?

Does your mobo support dual channel? Are you sure the game you play eats up RAM? Have you checked RAM usage? It doesn't have to be same brand. Same size: yes.

it does support dual channel, and im always around 7 gigs with around 20-30fps. ram should be a problem since i have an rx480 and an i5 4460

Ram that comes in "dual channel" or "quad channel" kits are just validated that the dims work with each other. If you add another 8gb stick you should be fine. If your ram is set to auto they will probably default to the looser timings if they are not the same.

Most likely either a poor optimized game. Can't believe how it would have tanked your performance. People are getting good results with igpu

Yeah look at this

with that kind of game the gpu would never be the bottleneck, but its still very poorly optimized and compressed. even minecraft with a 128x128 texture pack doesnt take that much ram
