Question on reference design gpu's and watercooling.

Hey all

I was just wondering does it void the warranty on a gpu if you remove the original cooler and add your water block? My one 7870 has a sticker on one of the screw and thought it would be like the Xbox 360 where if the sticker was ripped or removed its no more.

ALSO is it worth waiting till black Friday to buy a R9 290 with potential coupon codes to bring down price slight and risk being out of stock or just buy it now.

If you want to water cool i would wait to get that better card because after you set it up it will be a pain to switch. Not sure on the warrenty but i think it would

I plan on watercooling the R9 290 when i get it. I have my rads, pump/res, and such all picked out. Just waiting for now. But was just wondering if I should get it now (and play a bit with the reference cooler then have my water cooling stuff come in later this month or just wait til black friday/ cyber monday where there could be a potential coupon code but also risk the chance of being out of stock.

Most vendors will void the warranty if you open up the card.

If you plan on water cooling it, make sure you buy a card that is built on the reference design and not a custom PCB

Like the current R9 290's that are out now is what i plan on getting. Im pretty sure none of them have custom PCB's or anything.

I heared that the guys from XFX are more easy going with warranty than other manufacturers of AMD cards. They require the card in 1 piece and as long as you have the standard heatsink on it you'll get replacement... pretty much same with EVGA on nVidia side.

Intel i7 7820X (delidded) @ 4.9GHz - MSI X299 M7 ACK + EKWB Fullcover Block - G.Skill Trident Z 32GB @ 3466MHz - nVidia Titan Xp + EKWB Fullcover Block @ 2.1GHz - Samsung 960Pro 2x - WDD Blue 2TB - Seasonic 750W Platinum - modded Corsair 600C - Hardtubed Custom Watercooling

Do you have any idea why XFX R9 290 cards are more expensive than other ones on Newegg? XFX is $419 w/o shipping (shipping is $5.92) and others are $399.99 w/o shipping. (same shipping price)

It will probably void the warranty, but make sure your card and the water block are compatible.

I read everywhere and with reviewers that EK's 290x waterblock works with the 290. So I'm probably going to get that.

The reason why XFX is slighty more expensive is, the better warranty and the service they provide. I've read many reviews about several manufacturers and XFX's service is premium on AMD side, just like EVGA on nVidia side.

Like the call center agents, these guys actually have knowledge about the hardware they sell... not like other where I sometimes had to explain to them which kind of hardware their company produces... in other words the better service is more expensive but you'll be happy in case you'll ever need them.
