Endless Sky linux crash

I have been playing Endless Sky on windos for a while now and picked it back up on my new computer running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. When I launch it from steam it says it is running but nothing shows up. It does pin one core at 100 and fills up all 16gb of ram I have then steam says it is no longer running. I have tried re-downloading it and that does not help. Can anyone suggest another corse of action?

And on the first day god said: "Cue one GO" And there was light!
