i'm meaning to get closed back over-ear / around-ear headphones so i can take it with me outside (plugged into my smartphone). i am thinking of the sennhesier 598 Cs because i heard it has similar sound signature of the 558, which i have. i can accept any other headphones, but i'm looking for a neutral signature - maybe a bit more bass though.

the budget is $200 by the way

Sennheiser mostly has that warm sound if you're into that. It's not so much as bass, but more like rolled off highs and more low end extention. I think the HD7 DJ is worth a look at too next to the 598 C. I'm actually looking at a handful of cans for work since I'm not into my Jaybirds anymore unless I'm working out - the 598 C, HD7 and VModa Crossfades are on my list. Only thing keeping me from buying currently is figuring out whether or not I value mobility over sound signature.

i tried out the vmoda crossfades in-store. didn't listen to much music but they weren't very comfortable on my head. in comparison my 558 is near perfect for my head

to me mobility is a bit more valued if i'm going places with the headphones, but sound still matters. but the devices i'll be plugging it into aren't audiophile grade anyways. it doesn't have to collapse down but would be nice if the cups can swivel so it can sit around my neck like a scarf. should be easily powered as well, removable cable, etc.

I hear the XL pads are a necessity for them which is what I'll be getting for them if I get the headphone at all.

The ATH-M40X will be more "mobile" than what Sennheiser has currently - other than the HD 280 but that is not comfortable at all imo. The sound signature of the M40X will be slightly different than the Sennys but it has slightly boosted bass and brighter treble if you're into that.

is the M40x any different from the M50x?

any other suggestions?

The Sennheiser HD 7 is still on sale on Amazon. The Sennheiser Urbanite XL might be a good buy based on the frequency graphs as it shows the usual Sennheiser sound, but those don't always tell you everything. Both of those are what I'm also currently glazing over, but I may give up since I have too many headphones right now and can't get rid of them.

Those and what I talked about previously are the only ones I know of that would possibly fit your criteria.

the Urbanite XL has an android and iOS versions.. not sure why they have two versions. if that'll affect compatibility, then that might be a problem.

Apple does their terminals differently for headphones - completely backwards from how the standard is.

Not that it matters now since Apple doesn't believe in the headphone jack.
