So I have an i3 2100 and a compatible motherboard lying around. Can the 2100 still be worth it to go out and buy some DDR3 and make myself a good secondary PC, or should I just sell it?

i5 6600k and GTX 1070 but I play 1600-900. 1440p BABY!

Still, don't put too much faith in my buying decisions. xD

It would be good if you wanted to make a nas or host some websites or a personal cloud or something like that.

Do you think it could rival a G3258?

Depends, the i3 is pretty decent, but if you have the money upgrade it to an i5 compatible with the chipset (or i7) and add a decent gpu (if you are looking for something to game on, maybe a LAN PC or something.)

If I was gonna build a gaming system, I'd just get a GPU for my current. I'm just wondering if I can get something for really cheap with what I have already.

Well, with what youve got, some ram and a weak gpu as you mentioned "  a weak gaming system " would be pretty cheap, just get a used gpu, nothing fancy, and a mdeia PC could be easily made with no gpu just add some ram and you technically are ready to go if you have the other crucial components
