Just got the HP Omen 15 (2017) yesterday and decided to download overwatch to test it's performance. When the laptop is unplugged, fps always fluctuates and often dip down to the low 20s. When plugged in, the fps is able to always remain at my custom fps cap (70). This is on high graphics btw.

So my question is, is it normal such performance decrease when the laptop is unplugged? I have tried the different power modes ( high performance and creating my own one ) but they all seem to have the same results which is low fps and stuttering. This is my first time owning a laptop so kinda noob here. Is this something I should worry about or is it normal for such performance drop to occur when the laptop is unplugged?

Specs for the laptop are as followed:

CPU: Intel i7-7700hq

GPU: Nvidia GTX 1050Ti

RAM: 16GB DDR4 2133Mhz

Screen Res: 1080p

Ps: While running overwatch, I used HWmonitor and noticed that during the stuttering the cpu always underclocks to below 1Ghz.

Probably on some sort of power saver power plan, change it to performance mode.

Did change to performance mode in control panel but stuttering still occurs when unplugged.

Change the power plan, probably set to not let the CPU/GPU utilization go over 50% or something like that.

I did. I just found out that there's this energy star program by hp, could that be it?

Maybe, just do a clean install of Windows. It will get rid of all the crap HP put on it, and (probably) solve your issue.

Download the install media from Microsoft's website, and run it. Then boot from it on your laptop.

Yes. Do a clean install software may be the problem. But it's very common. Power delivery to components from the battery is capped to prevent unnecessary risk so alot of times components run power throttled to hell and back on battery.
