Mic not working

I have a cable that runs from my headphones to my PC with a mic on it. I can hear sound great and I used to use the mic until last week when it just stopped working. Yes, I did plug the right cables into the right places. When I go into the recording devices settings it shows that it is connected and when I wiggle the cord around it makes some popping noises. What's goin on?
