my laptop is currently running 16gb of DDR3 memory at 1600Mhz dual channel,   but I am running out of memory and getting hard faults causing some issues.

my laptop supports 32gb at 1333Mhz single channel,  if I upgrade my memory capacity but lower the speed of my memory, will that help me or hurt me?

its a dell m4600 (precision) laptop,  not using it for gaming, using it for work related things (multiple IDEs,  SQL jobs, etc)

ram speeds dont really matter that much and i doubt yr using over 16gb unless you are doing massive cpu work which in a laptop i wont think you would be not to use 16gb of ram

You must have a lot of tabs open to be running out of memory with 16GBs. I mean at least double digits on a few browsers. If your running out of memory then yeah upgrade to 32GB, even if it is a bit slower... but how are you running out of memory????

For most applications, RAM speed doesn't really impact performance much.

However, I would see why you're running out of memory in the first place and see if it's a problem you can fix.

Gaming really isn't memory intensive. If he's running production focused applications, RAM usage will be a lot higher. OP never even mentioned it was for games.

More Ram

If you were going from 16 gb at 2400 to 32 at 800, then there might be a difference, but from 1600 to 1333 is not that big of a change.

also going from dual channel to single channel

right....

Can you run a benchmark, buy the kit, run a benchmark and compare? Then return if it is not better
