How could I do Digital Maker with my local scout group?

grimreeper132

Ok, I am looking into doing the Digital maker stages with my local scout group, as I help in running it, and do badges with them occasionally, (normally tech related) and I am looking into how to do the digital maker badge with them, Stage 1 is easy enough, I can do that stage 2, with a bit of funding so I can get them to make a circuit. the problem is stage 3 onwards, as in stage 3 I need to get them to

  1. Write a game or app for a programmable device. You should include:
    • event conditions (when your game reacts to something that happens)
    • iteration (when your code or instructions are repeated)
    • variables (for scoring, health or counting things within the game).
    • discuss your development and how you overcame any bugs.
Useful sources include: Micobit (https://www.microbit.co.uk/) Codebug (http://www.codebug.org.uk/) or Raspberry Pi- (https://www.raspberrypi.org/)

I don't know how to do this myself, due to me not knowing how to code, and this includes coding. I accept that it's just quite away to do this with them, but I would need to start looking into it just now so I can do it with them.

So two things, what programmes can I use in order to let them code the game, it doesn't need to extremely complex, like pong or snake level complex. I guess that there will be the need to get programmes to do this so what programmes would I need to get, and where can I get a easy step to step guide for both me and the scouts to follow to do this, so any help here?

You can try Scratch. They have tons of examples and guides: https://scratch.mit.edu/educators/
If you have a Raspberry Pi, you can follow their guide for Scratch: https://www.raspberrypi.org/learning/getting-started-with-scratch/

I don't have a pi, I have one ardunino, but I need that for other things. and yea I will try with scratch then thanks

You should take a look on that: http://khanning.github.io/scratch-arduino-extension/

oh, ok, thanks, that looks handy, thanks, I will look into seeing how possible this is for them to do, but I think that this all looks to be easy enough to do for them, (we have 2 which have only used a computer 5/6 times max in their lives)
