I'm just playing around on the internet looking at parts for a server build. It made me come up with this idea.

What I want to do is, run Windows Server (2008 R2 or 2012/R2) on the components, and then run pfSense in a virtual machine for the router. I know that Windows Server can do what pfSense can do but pfSense can do more. I want 1 single machine and not two separate machines.

If I get 2 add-on NICs, install them on the server (host) and then dedicate those 2 add-on NICs to pfSense in a VM for input from the modem and output for clients while leaving the NIC that is on the motherboard to the server.

Once everything is in order, one of the add-on NICs that have been configured for DHCP and what not and plugged into a switch and provide DHCP and internet to clients, then plug in the on-board NIC (Host).

In my mind I know it will work but I want second opinions.

I end with these 2 questions:

Will it work without any conflicts?
And
Will the server (host) receive DHCP and other configurations from pfSense in the VM?
