I would strongly suggest you watch a bunch of video copilots tutorials on Element 3D. They will give you a good base to build and experiement on as they show of a lot of basics and how you can utiliate them and not just a step by a step guide but he actually explains how it works and why. 

 

However I would guess you have missed or have some faulty settings in the effects menu.

I've watched their tutorials and I did everything exactly the way they did.

Was some time since I last used Element but firstly a background layer might help? Other than that I would go through the settings again as if you have done as they have it would most likley work quite well

The background is just a black solid, I even tried using a 360 environment map, but that didn' help. The E3D tutorials Video Copilot has were recorded using an older version, that might be an issue
