likes to keep things normal

Especially with a game that is as intensive on resources as GTA V, your RAM load with the settings you had selected was normal :)

So ive had my pc for about a year and it has been running perfectly but, I have just noticed that whilst playing games like GTAV and BF1, my memory spikes up to around 80%, this should not happen as I have 8GB of memory not 4GB. Could this be that one of my DIMM sticks is broken or something else to do with memory allocation?

You just need more ram if you're worried about it, this is normal ram usage for game play plus background programs.

But if you roughly add up all of the programs memory usage, it doesnt equal the supposed 86%

It's not going to equal exactly 86% due to a couple of things such as rounding, estimating, delay, etcetera. And 16 gb doesn't mean your computer's os has access to exactly 16000 MB of memory.

There also may be some things that just don't show up in task manager using memoru.

They were set by default to very high but ive lowered them as i my game froze for a second then returns to normal

I have heard GTA V has a lot of problems with memory leaks. Does restarting the game happen to fix ram usage? I realize restarting your game every few minutes is not logical but 8gb doesn't surprise me at all when looking at game requirements, especially on higher settings.

Do you have a page file set?

I had some insane ram usage playing gtav at 4K on 970 sli's. I had 16gb at the time and it closed the game due to memory usage. I went to 32gb and set my keyboard lcd to monitor ram usage and it climbed to 24gb!! Rise of the tomb raider could hit around 19gb also

Yeah then if all the RAM is registering, considering 8GB is the minimum and that is what you have installed in your system, everything is running fine. You have two practical, but three possible solutions to this issue.

1. (Most likely not what you want to do) Just deal with the lag that you experienced.

2. Turn your settings down in game and/or close background apps to free more memory.

3. Invest in another stick or two of RAM to bump up to 16gb. If you choose this, I'd be happy to recommend some RAM that could be purchased relatively cheaply.

Not really sure what you mean by the page file set

Then you may just want to go with turning down the settings and closing other apps you have running. Remember, using a good amount of your RAM isn't a bad thing.

idc what resolution you're playing at 24GB is NOT normal.

I never at any point said it was normal, what I was saying is that I also had issues with gtav, at the time I put it down to the 3.5gb/4gb vram on the 970s and figured it was losing textures into the normal ram

In my computer/properties/performance/advanced there's an option to set the page file size. If you have excessive ram you can set it to no page file, however in your case it should be set to either Windows decide or manual
