Issue with Virtual sound 7.1

I recently got a new set of HyperX Cloud 2's, which have the 7.1 virtual sound option. My buddy has the same ones, and when i went over to his house and tried them with the setting on, they sound much better. Whenever I use the setting, I can hear more sounds in general when I'm gaming, but it sounds like everything is slightly behind me. I've tried looking into the audio settings, but I don't know what else to do.
