Dear LinusTechTips Forums,

I know this has been probably asked a million times, and i have seen a handful of forum posts on the internet, but everyone seems to only get solutions to their specific setup. I'm trying to get audio from my PC and my PS4 into my Razer Kraken Pro headset (So i cant talk on Discord/Skype and play PS4 games). Now I have found a solution that i wish to be only temporary, I have a 3.5mm male to male connected from my PS4 controller to my blue line in on my MOBO IO. and my headset plugged into the green and red ports on my IO. By enabling the line in on the sound settings on Windows 7 I am able to get audio from my PC and PS4 into my Razer Kraken Pro headset. Now this works BUT I feel this is not the correct way to do it, and there must be another way, also by doing this i get a faint white noise due to plugging directly into my audio ports on my MOBO. There has to be a more legit way to get this, I have thought about buying a mixer but not sure if that is the right way and if it would work with my headset, I have no experience with mixers so idk. Any solution really works even if it involves me buying something.

TLDR!

From what I read you need a mixer that your PC and PS4 go into. I did this with my 360 and mac years ago. Note for the PS4 you will need RCA cables to go into the mixer. For the PC I'd just get a 3.5mm out from it with a 1/4" adapter on the other end into the mixer. Once you have them going IN to the mixer you just plug the headset into the master out. I don't believe you will be able to use the mic this way though.

System: i7 4790K, Hyper 212 EVO, 16 GB Crucial Ballistix, GTX 1070 Super clocked, MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition, Corsair RM 750, Corsair 750D (with 2 additional 140mm NZXT fans up top for exhaust.)

I suppose it's an option but there's got to be a way to get the mic from my headset to work as well and there has got to be a more specialized product for this, I really don't want to have to spend money on a mic as this headset is fairly new. I wonder if a soundcard helps in anyway? Do soundcards have line ins and the things i need for this, would they get rid of the MOBO static/white noise?

I don't think the noise is coming from where you think it is, it's more likely to be on the output of the ps4 or interference on the unbalanced connection than from 'using the motherboard port'.

Also, any way that works is a legit way. The way you've worked around the problem is by far the easiest, simplest and cheapest solution, and is probably the best solution as you retain full operation of the headset with no cost.

One other option would be if your motherboard has an optical audio input. This would work the same way as the 3.5mm input, but would prevent interference. Get a toslink (likely a mini to full size) cable. Then the same setup as you've currently got.

Alternatively, get a cheapo mixer, a 3.5mm TRRS to dual TRS adapter (should be included with the headset), plug the audio outputs from the computer and ps4 into the mixer, plug the TRS for headphone input into the mixers headphone output, plug the TRS for the microphone output into the computers mic input and you'll still be able to use the mic.
