That processor is pretty old and outdated, so depending on the video card you get, especially something newer, that processor will be a huge bottleneck.  It also depends on the games your playing, but honestly, don't waste your time or money.  $500 is pretty steep for that.

Pretty sure it was released in 2012.  In computer years, thats ancient.

If you're looking to save money, look for some second hand parts.  I've built some pretty good machines with parts i've bought off ebay and craigslist.  Just gotta be careful who you buy from, obviously.

Sandy bridge might bottleneck the graphics card, because sandy bridge uses PCI-e 2.0 but the graphics card is PCI-e 3.0, they are compatible, but I imagine with a CPU that old there would be problems.
