Is multi gpu support that shitty still?

its not that is shitty, but games don't simply scale well with it, therefore a waste of money. it usually comes into use with video editting since i see time reduction with SLI/Crossfire usually. Some games run worst with SLI/crossfire while some may get little to no frame increase leaving the other GPUs than the main one useless.

I currently have a sapphire tri-x r9 290 and i am thinking of an upgrade this Christmas. Basically my question is, do you think i should get a second r9 290 (or 390 is availability is better) and run them in crossfire, or should i sell my r9 290 and pickup a gtx 1070. Keep in mind i live in Canada so the prices are a bit fucked over here.

Hey.

I'd go with selling the r9 290, as 2x r9 290's performs similarly or worse than a gtx 1070. Additionally, mutli-gpu applications seem to rarely work as intended...

No, not at all. It's normally people that don't have a mutli GPU set up that say this non-sense. I can't speak for crossfire, however I just moved from 2x 970's and the SLI experience was great in almost every game I own, the only game to cause issues was Just Cause 3 which had zero support. There's obviously the other question of power consumption and extra heat, I have a 1000w psu and was on dual custom loops wiht a 240 + 360mm rad on the GPU loop
