Hey hello, I am planning to buy some parts to build my own computer in a couple of months (jan or feb), so I am doing the research now so I can get the best for my budget, it will be my first build, however I have some experience assembling computers (I use to upgrade the one that I had) the only part that I have never changed or "unplug" from the computer is the CPU, and for what I've seen its quite simple. I need some help to pick the parts that would give me the results I am looking for, so far I have choosen the cpu cooling, the  gpu (not the edition though), and the CPU (not so sure about this one). so, to begin with i will answer the introductory questions about my plans:

1. Budget & Location: I live in Australia and my budget is around 3500 $AUD which is almost 2600 american dollars, I am willing to spend a few bucks more if it is worth it

2. Aim:

Will be used mostly for gaming, but i might want to do some streaming and video edition as well (so the computer should be able to run the game, skype and also the streaming software) (kind of games?, well I can only think of star wars battlefront, and probably some VR in the future).

3. Monitors

Right now I am using a full hd monitor (1080p, 27") it doesn't have any display port that I can use (I don't know why as it is a brand new LG monitor...) and I am probably buying another one (also after assembling the rig...).

4. Peripherals:

I do not need any peripherals such as keyboard or mouse, but I am unsure to which windows should I use and if I should purchase it, or just crack it....I do not like the new windows 10, I am currently using windows 7 and I really like it.

5. Why are you upgrading

Because I am currently using a core i7 920 CPU, 8 GB of ram and a radeon HD 6800. A very old rig and I can not play anything on it, beside I think it is time to have a good computer that can last for years and that I can use if I buy a VR headset.

Extras: I am not sure if I should consider AMD's cpus as I have always had an intel, and I am planning to buy the I7 6700k or 6800K

I want to buy the gtx 1080 probably the sea hawk edition but not sure (definitely GTX1080 but not sure if sea hawk or another one)

the CPU cooling would be the noctua NH-D15 (if someone knows where to get the fans in blue color I would really appreciate the tip as I want the rig to be blue themed)

The motherboard is tough to find a blue one. I guess black or black/white is close enough. The RAM sticks are a nice blue color and not way overpriced for the current market time. I chose the same GPU that I have becasue EVGA is just the best, man. The side of it has a lot of RBG lighting saying "EVGAGEFORCE GTX 1080FTW

I don't know what else to say, other than you should look into 1440p

wouldn't it be better to just put windows 8 or windows 9?

Windows 9 isn't a thing. Go with Windows 10. Windows 7 is like 7 years old. Windows 10 is better than 8/8.1 imo. And you are getting DX12 support with Windows 10.

Man very much appreciated, and sorry to bother you again, do you recommend me to buy some noctua fans instead of the ones you choosen? (corsair sp140)

oh and BTW anything less expensive in the SSD? or do you recommend me to buy that one ( i think I am fine with half tera for half the price)

and I am a bit curious as to why do you have inter core i7 5820 instead of something like the 6800?

If you want something quieter go for Noctua fans. Get the 512 GB version of the SSD if you want just make sure it's the 960 PRO and not 950. I have the 5820K because the 6800K wasn't released when I bought parts.

I have not been in the PC building community for very long. I have done a lot of research for my PC though that I built a few months ago. It took me over 6 months of looking into hardware to decide on everything. Just assume I know nothing and everything I say is just an opinion, to be safe.

If you're getting a 1080, then that gpu is way overkill for 1080p gaming, IMO. Hybrid cards are pretty cool, I dont think it is worth the price discrepancy, though. If I was going to go down that route then I would just drop ~$700 and a full weekend building a custom loop for my GPU and CPU. I love love love my 1080 ftw. EVGA is great from everything I have experienced. They sent me the thermal pads for their vrm heat mod thing very quickly and it was very easy and actually quite fun to fix.

I can recommend anything that I have in my machine. I might be biased though :1 I only recommended those specific case fans and that ram becasue they have good reviews and are blue, without being stupid expensive. I am one of those 'Noctua for life' people. Noctua coolers and fans really are the best, unless you care about looks. Performance wise in every measurable way they are just the best, full stop.

Here is a completed build post I made, but I have changed a few things since then. I also just ordered 16 more GB of ram and I am replacing my 12s cooler for a D14. Here is the link though with some iphone pictures: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/Zr2RsY

Sorry for the late reply I've been busy.

I agree with you with, but I will use it for VR as well and I will build a custom loop (in that order). if I were to use the GPU just for 1080p gaming would be a total waste, but the fact that this card is VR ready and one of the (if not the) best in the market right now means that I will be able to run new games for a decent amount of years. I do not do the custom loop now because i prefer to expend that extra money in the computer and save later for the loop, and most important: I don't think I'm ready yet....

but for now this is probably what I will be buying in the next months: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/ykptKZ

Any recomendation?

which thermal paste should I buy? I've read that the silver is good but hard to apply, and the one you use in your build (the artic MX4) is very good and easy to apply....

That's pretty good thermal paste, but most coolers already come with thermal paste.

Sall good, no worries! Life should get in the way.

That is a very good build. The cooler you have is pretty much the best air cooler money can buy. The DT 1080 you chose is pretty much just the reference design with a different cooler. I have the none DT 1080 ftw and it is a beast of a card! IThe only thing I don't like is that the "FTW" under 1080 on the card isnt RGB backlit. If you're not going to really step into maximum overclocking then the DT will be fine. If youre going to put the card on water with a loop later on, I would highly recommend the 1080 FTW with the 10 + 2 power phase and not the DT version. Also, if youre not going to really get into overclocking your cpu, then the d15 cooler is pretty excessive, which is not necessarily a bad thing! I do like your PSU too, there is nothing wrong with it, but I would buy one of those new G3 PSUs, personally. I really wanted a a 650w g2 PSU in my build. Unfortunately, when I was buying my hardware it was stupid over-priced. I wasn't having that, so I ended up going with a GS, which is just okkaay from my research. If I were to do it over today, I would definitely go for the new g3, I am really attracted to it. P2 is very good, no issues with it really.

Overall, that is a sick build man. You are going to be doing some serious work with it other than gaming and VR, right?

If you are just gaming and streaming, I think you would be much better off with a 6700k. The 6700k actually outperforms x99 chipsets regarding gaming. x99 chips like the 6800k or even a 6950x won't perform as well, relative to the 6700k for strictly gaming. This is due to the core clocks that go much, much higher with the 6700k. To me your build looks like a a very high end personal computer that can render video content quickly and run very intensive CAD programs. Gaming wise, I think your ROI would be much better with a z170 chipset. Technically, the i5 6600k is really all I that I need, but I went with the 6700k, becasue it helps a great deal with streaming and rendering over the 6600k and when my set up is over $3,000USD, I might as well :1

Although, for hardcore VR and if you want to spend the money, x99 is not a bad option. You get a lot more benefits from x99 than z170. The relative performance I was describing, really isnt noticeable from what I have read. Not a big deal at all. If I was wanting to spend an extra $300-$600 on my build when I was planning it out initially, I would have gone for x99 and the 6800k. The only problem is I would never be able to take advantage of the extra cores, so I would feel like I am wasting money.

Thank you for the reply again.

I will be buying the custom loop after the VR headset, I don't do it now because I rather spend the extra money on some more thing for the build instead of buying something that right now I don't feel capable of assembling (I am still learning), but I will definitely buy the parts and work on one for my rig in the future.

About the cooling all I can say is that I live in a place that really gets hot in summer, and for some personal reasons I move around every 6 months (that's why I am still not sure about the noctua, as I've read that if you move the pc a lot it puts some pressure on the mobo) and not all  the places I move to have AC, so I need a very good cooling to stand the 40℃.

And just to finalize, i did some research and you are completely right with the 6700K, it is almost the same than the 6800K (FOR GAMING PURPOSES!!!!) and sometimes it is even better (but it is so slightly than is not even noticeable), so I was modifying my list when I realized that the 6700K is not compatible with the motherboard (here:https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/ktrwyf) do you have any suggestion?....if possible with some blue on it (or at least black).

Plus you have to consider how much farther the 6700k can overclock than a 6800k. I have seen some cases of people overclocking their 6700k to 4.9GHz! I would say the d15 should be okay, just don't move the chassis suddenly. It is all about inertia with these big heat sinks. Although, motherboards take A LOT to break now a days. Then again, I have read the motherboard is the first significant thing to fail, regardless. I have read that most people say your CPU will outlast your motherboard.

Your motherboard is usually what your windows key is registered to. So, most of the time, changing your cpu or any other hardware won't require a new Windows key or another Windows installation. If you change your motherboard, you might have to buy another windows key. ALTHOUGH, I have also read you can just call Microsoft and they will help move your key to another motherboard for free. This information is mostly irrelevant though. After 4-5 years most people will probably be building a whole new system anyway. I was informed of this a few months ago, I'm new to the custom PC building community too :1

I spent over 6 months researching how computer hardware and building works before I ordered my parts. Then I started adding stuff and it has been a severe addiction ever since. I really like value. I may go for a full custom loop in the future, but it is hard to justify the cost. I am also like you. I want to wait until I have a very good understand and a good bit of experience overlooking. I'll probably buy a new case in addition to my $500-$800 loop. It looks like a lot of fun!

Sorry, it seems your link didn't work for me.

There is a much larger variety of z170 motherboards than x99. It depends on what features you find valuable. I chose my motherboard, becasue it had red on it and decent onboard sound for my HD600 headphones. The virtual 7.1 surround sound is also pretty good.

Here are 5 motherboards with good reviews that are color neutral-ish. I would buy any one of them for myself. It is very difficult to find a good blue one, for some reason.

I have an USB wifi adapter, any recommendations on that?

Thank you.

speaking of wifi, I bought myself a higher end wifi adapter, just becasue I spent a lot of money on my router last year. So, I felt I had to get something up to that standard. You can get away with the cheapest usb adapters, it really isnt that big of a deal. Unless you have a lot money invested into your internet service, modem and router.

I recommend trying to plug in via Ethernet, if that is a possibility. That is the cheapest way to utilize the best connection. Wifi was the only option for me. My router is directly downstairs and running a cable would have been very inconvenient.

Be on the lookout for the next AMD CPUs! I would wait a few weeks for people to review the zen line of cpus. Chances are zen might be competitive, considering the i7 7700k coming out soon shouldn't really be that big of an improvement, if at all. Zen from AMD should come out in a few weeks and the next gen Intel chips will be out q1 2017.

I will wait, but not to buy them....The release oft the Zen will drop the i7 prices (I don't like to buy things as soon as they hit the market) so unless for some reason my build is delayed I am still buying the i7..... Here is the list so far, from the mobos you recommended me, I found this one is the best, and the extra 40 dollars for the aura thing are not worth because I will be buying LED magnetic strips. I also added the WIFI adapter that Matias recommended me, it seems to be pretty good.

I really appreciate your comments in case you have any...
