Hello LTT community,

this is my first M.2 acquisition and I'm a bit lost:

MSI Z170A Gaming M3 motherboard - Bios up to date

Win 7 64bits - up to date

Intel 600P SSD M.2

I am running win7 on my SSD samsung Evo 850 and bought an intel 600P M.2 to install heavy programs on it.

I installed it and firstly I couldn't boot anymore, windows failed to start 0xc00000e - error with winload.exe

repair bootrec failed, so I plugged OS SSD (evo850) on other SATA and.... it booted !  cool.

windows started to install new hardware : same Evo850 (on new SATA) and Intel 600p SSD

reboot needed, and after same windows failed to start issue (had to remove and put back intel 600p) I could boot with Evo850 and 600p.

But.... Intel 600P SSD M.2 not recognized anyware, not on device manager, and on hardware peripherical PCI controller error (warning sign) but couldn't update driver or install new hardware.

I tried booting with M.2 only (and install windows 7on it) but not even recognized in BIOS nor win7 install.

defective M.2 or did I miss something ? I just want to format it and install heavy programs on it, I don't want to install win7 on it, I know it's a pain and I don't need it

You have to install these update  to add native driver support in NVM Express in Windows 7 first. Did you do it?

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2990941

You have to boot only in UEFI. CSM must be "off"

Did you install the Intel rst Drivers?

could be DOA. Check with seller. You can get replacement.

If you have any other system to check with, do that.

Intel Core i3 2100 @ 3.10GHz - Intel Stock Cooler - Zotac Geforce GT 610 2GB Synergy Edition

Intel DH61WW - Corsair® Value Select 4GBx1 DDR3 1600 MHz - Antec BP-300P PSU

WD Green 1TB - Seagate 2.5" HDD 1TB - Seagate Barracuda 500GB - Antec X1 E.

Also in some motherboards you have to turn ON the M.2 connector, which turns off a mSATA port usually.

Page 2-36, you need to enable m.2 mode. I'd assume it's similar on other Mobos.

No it is not similar on other Mobos. Sata m2 and Pcie m2 run both over PCH in z170. It doesn't matter.

This is Asus Bios. It is different.

This m.2 mode setting is mostly important @x99 Chipset. Because pcie m2 run over CPU with x4 gen3 and sata m2 run over pch with x2 gen2
