DIY caddy replacing cd drive

so I have an idea

I want to build an adapter in order to be able to replace my cd drive from my macbook pro with an hdd

I know caddys are cheap, but I like playng arround, and since I have acces to a solder i was thinking to build an adapter myself.

The question is that i dont know how caddys work, i asume that they are just passive adapters with no electronics, but I want to make sure that there is no neet for any electronics in order to connect my hdd via cdrom port,

there are some electronic components in my mini sata to sata adapter. I think the only purpose is for the HDD LED. I cant really pull apart my laptop to check
