At the end of the day though, TOSLINK lacks features that I need. It doesn't matter if it's optical.

I haven't looked

but I suspect TrueHD and DTS Master capable receivers, without dynamic range compression, aren't for mere mortals

for the rest of us, 5.1 DD and DTS is enough - I use TOSLink and I'm quite happy with it since the power and digital signal from the source never gets mixed into the DAC

audio professions don't use more than stereo and the TOSLink is quite capable of delivering two channel PCM audio
