I currently have a second PC in a hidden location that I use as a remote backup for LVM snapshots, and storage using rsync.

I had an old 60gb SSD and two WD RE in raid for my desktop and Iv decided to replace them for a 240gb SSD because the noise of the HDDs have always annoyed me and the 240gb drives are cheap now.

So now for backup & NAS I have a total of:

2X 3 year old 2TB Western Digital Red WD20EFRX

1X brand new Western Digital Red WD20EFRX same as above but prob newer firmware

2x Western Digital RE4 250GB 5 year old WD RE

1x 5 year old intel 520 60Gb SSD

My NAS has four sata ports and I'm wondering what drives should i use in the NAS and what drives i should put into USB cases for back up. Theres still a ton of life left in the old drives according to the SMART reports. I dont need RAID coz it doesn't need to run 24/7 and i turn it off remotely to save power. Im thinking I could put the NAS OS on the 60gb SSD and use the brand new WD red as storage; then swap the other reds at the end of the week as I'm doing now offsite.  then sell the WD RE drives, but i dont think i could sell the RE drives for much, id like to repurpose them for something.

What arrangement do you think i should put in my NAS?
