Hello everyone,

I forgot to change to AHCI mode in my haste when I was building my pc, however when I went to bios to change it, it said I was already on AHCI mode but at the same time samsung ssd wizard tells me that I have AHCI deactivated so I'm a bit confused as to whether it's on and function or if BIOS is glitched, etc. Please let me know if more info is needed!

Specs:

Intel Core i7 Skylake 6700k 4.2gHz

ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming

Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD

G.Skill Ripjaws V Series (2x8) 16GB 3200mHz

MSI Gaming X GTX1060 6GB

Thanks in advance

Hi there :)

Changing the SATA mode between IDE, AHCI and RAID will require you to reinstall your OS. Could you post a screenshot of your BIOS and the report you are getting from the tool?

You can check if you are using AHCI or IDE the following way:

You need to be in AHCI mode in order for the SSD to benefit from TRIM.

Windows OS uses AHCI by default unless the BIOS limits it when set to IDE mode. This is done BEFORE the installation of the OS and switching between modes will require you to reinstall the OS. There are ways to go around this but involves tweaks in the system registry and I wouldn't recommend that.

You can check which mode is the OS running on by viewing the list of controller drivers.

In the Device Manager expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and see if any entry there contains "AHCI" in it. if there's such an entry without any yellow exclamation marks or red "X" marks then you should have AHCI properly enabled.

You can even check what driver is the system using by right-clicking on one of the controllers > Properties > Details > Change property to Service and then you should see one of the three:

pciide.sys (means you are using Microsoft IDE driver

msahci (means you are using Mcrosoft AHCI driver

iastor.sys (means you are using Intel ANCI/RAID driver

Let me know if you need anything else!
