100% disk usage

Go to solution Solved by NeoFrux,

Hm... And your WD Green drive, does it lock up? You've tried its cable / SATA port, too, I take it from the previous topic? And it's in AHCI mode?

If the answers to those questions are "no", "yes", and "yes" respectively, it's probably time to start filling out an RMA form.

You can check AHCI mode by entering your motherboard's UEFI setup, then going to Peripherals->SATA Configuration and checking which setting "SATA Mode Selection" is set to.

Okay this is an update from my last post:

Quick Summary of previous post: New SSD, is showing 100% disk usage with 0KB/s read and write. Whenever this happens, Resource Monitor shows no applications at all, so there's no way of seeing what's using the disk.

Since my last post, I've been using my old drive as the new one was unusable. I have since reinstalled Windows on the drive around 4 times, with no other drives plugged in, and the problem still persists. The system is unusable 90% of the time. I've tried different mother board ports, and different cables, nothing has changed. Does anyone have any idea what causes this or if there's a way to fix it?

I'll echo @jools' suggestion of updating the firmware for the drive; The Sandisk SSD Dashboard should help there. Besides that, when the SSD locks up like that, do you get any events logged in Event Viewer under Windows Logs->System? Also, just to confirm, you're running in AHCI mode, right (it looks like it from CrystalDiskInfo but I feel I should ask anyway)? Does the SSD become unresponsive in other PC's as well?

I've got the SSD dashboard installed, no firmware updates are available. How do I check if the disk is running in AHCI?

I tried installing the drive into my laptop before and it seemed to work fine, however the laptop doesn't have as many programs and i didn't thoroughly test it, so i wouldn't say for sure that it works fine in other computers, i can test it if necessary.

Conveniently, while typing this the disk locked up again so I was able to check event viewer straight after, here's what i found:

The WD drive rarely goes about 50% usage, it's never locked up. I swapped the 2 drives before making the post, different ports and cables. I'll restart now and check if it's in AHCI mode. But RMA it'll be i'm guessing, have you got a link to SanDisk's RMA on hand? If not i'll find it.

Yup, seems like it to me. Before you proceed with an RMA, got a return policy with the place you purchased it from? Would be a little easier. Either way, the RMA form is over at https://kb.sandisk.com/app/rmaform
