2k vs ultrawide

Hamil_P1

PC monitor

21:9 2560x1080 25" monitor

16:9 2560x1440 24" monitor

I mostly watch tv/movies and some causal gaming. (played bioshock, and planning to get fallout, project cars, doom)

I'm new to gaming so response time really doesn't make a difference, but running at 60fps is appreciated

currently running i5 6500 with whatever igpu it has, 40-50fps in bioshock infinite, but want something better so...

Getting a 1060 gtx or 480 rx eventually

price: <200$

what would be better overall?

never get a ultrawide below 32'' because they are half as tall as a normal screen but wider. you are better off with the 1440p monitor.

Need a budget headphone for under 100$? Sennheiser HD 558 Headphones

Got a Skylake CPU (k) Here is a guide to OC it!

For casual gaming, 1440p is a much better upgrade than 144Hz imo. 1080p on 24-25" and more is just so blurry. The real estate for browsing coupled to the crispiness of the display makes it much more confortable to do anything in front of the screen. Moreover, you suggested a TN monitor, it's a really bad choice for casual gaming as color reproduction is miles better on an IPS display, while the response time difference won't be so noticeable for the average user. For me, the ideal monitor would be 1440p, 144Hz, 24-25" IPS but that still doesn't exist :D

right...... yeah did you see he has a 1060? you are better off with a 1080p 144hz panel. as far as burliness? wtf are you talking about? I currently have that screen right now using it and there is no blur what so ever. where you get blurriness is going for a 1080p at 27-30in where you can actually see the pixels. I rather play at higher frame rate with a good 1080p monitor. Now if I had a 1070 or better yet a 1080 sure without a doubt ill do 1440p at 144hz. but he has a 1060 so really at 2k he is gonna suffer https://www.engadget.com/2016/07/22/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1060-benchmarks/

compared to the monitor i have now the 21:9 is the same height just wider.

and i really don't expect a high improvement between 60hz to 144hz.  (i haven't gamed anything above 60 so idk, tell me if im wrong)

I didn't really mean that specific one, just as an example/ more of a theory based question.

so basically you'd weight higher refresh rate over a larger field of view?

yes higher refresh rate is extremely game changing also the larger field of view... no.... a lot of games and current AAA do not support 21:9, or if they do they will stretch the image out more. very few games such as gta v, arma 3, and mass effect 3 support it. even than with those games I would hands down rather have more frames because how much smoothers it is above 60fps. above 60fps you start going into real life motion, and much much smoother game play.

EDIT: also to add your 1060 will not hit 60fps on ultra-high settings at 2k, even an ultra wide it would be difficult as well.
