So guys, hello again! Guess who's back with a new task for you! Ready? Go!

So i have an SSD (120 gig 840 pro) which i would like to divide in two partitions, one for OS and one for storage (don't look me like that, i will explain). This will be for my father who does not have more than 30 gigs total on his PC with OS and everything, but the data he keeps he wants to be freaking intact. SO i would like to set a backup solution, i have 2 160 gig HDD to help with that (one sata2 and one IDE or w/e, the old standard). I was thinking about raid 1 but wouldn't that kill the speed of the SSD when writing to the SSD and the HDD at the same time?

In short i want an SSD that has 2 partitions that are backed up completely, so if the ssd fails for some reason i want to run the OS and the whole thing like nothing happened from the HDD. AND i want the speed of the system to be as if there was only SSD in there. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND i want it programless if possible, like raid where it's done outside of windows and it's configured on the mobo directly.

I am doing all this cuz my dad's PC failed and i wanna give him mine , but he wants the extra security. The quick responses are appreciated because I'm currently disassembling both machines so by the time you guys respond i would need a solution. Thanks!

So many hhd :3........you have a 120GB SSD "bootdrive" and you want to be running with a raid 1 160GB HDD (2xtimes)
I doubt that the Raid 1 Dual hhd would influence the reads and write being sustained by the SSD as its not part of the Raid array

And since the OS is on the SSD which you're also partitioning to which you are caching......to the 2 hard drives being run? to make the mechanical hdd's operate better

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levels#RAID_1

"Many older IDE RAID 1 controllers read only from one disk in the pair, so their read performance is always that of a single disk"

This may influence how your reads and writes. Also about the bit of "cuz my dad's PC failed and I wanna give him mine" your dissembling your entire pc to give him only your SSD?

Possibly having the Dual hhd in raid 1 is great but i'm not to sure if you would like to run 1 with the IDE dont you have 2 Sata2 ports?

Damn, i forgot to mention, i will not use both HDD for backup. I will use most likely the sata 2 one and the ssd (sata3) but will raid impact performance in any way?

Okay first of all I just wanna say I'm not super smart, but having read your post I wanna give people advice :)

Wait allow me to get this straight for cause im muddling myself

Raid 1 with a SSD and HDD

Isn't it better to just have both separate then partition some of the SSD storage to cache to the single HHD? I remember Linus speaking about doing that with a certain build.

I know he said never to go and ask someone to google it but.............. i read from this forum http://forums.storagereview.com/index.php/topic/28249-raid-1-ssd-and-hard-drive/

and if your use mozilla or chrome press CTRL+F (for search for this name "continuum" he explains that limited reads and writes for combining both an SSD and HDD in raid 1

Also the topic in that forum is in the same example your using but that guys asking is talking about Audio/Vido with Raid 1 SSD+HDD since its very similar
