apple iPhone 5c problem with lap top

I am trying to back up my iPhone 5c to my Macbook air, however whenever i connect my phone to the laptop i get a prompt that says "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone "user name" because an invalid response was received from the device". Every application is up to date on both the laptop and iPhone I'm very confused

plug the cable in other usb port and try again.
