Hi everyone!

I'm trying to build a more portable system so that I can bring it to college with me because my main system is starting to get really annoying for lugging back and forth. I'll mainly be using it to compile my projects for my classes, playing games (Crysis 3), and occasionally using virtual machines. I have till early August so I could possibly wait for Haswell to be released but I would like to buy a couple parts at a time till August instead of just buying all at once. More cores would really help with my CS classes but my friend hasn't had a problem with his 3570k.

Budget is around $1500 but less would be better.

My monitor is a 27" Dell Ultrasharp

I have Windows 8 Pro already through my school so I won't have to pay for that

I'll be dual booting Windows 8 and some Linux distro

Intel Build:

CPU: 3570K

Motherboard: Asus Maximus V Gene

AMD Build:

CPU: AMD FX-8350

Motherboard: Asus M5A78L-M LX Plus

Same for Both:

Case: SilverStone TJ08B-E (I really like the size of this case. It's the size of most ITX cases but supports M-ATX)

CPU Cooler: Thermaltake Water 2.0 Pro (120x49mm)

GPU: Asus GTX660 Ti or Sapphire Vapor-X HD 7950 (I can't decide)

PSU: NZXT Hale82 850W

Memory (RAM): G.Skill Sniper Series 16GB (2 x 8gb) DDR3 1866

SSD: OCZ Vector 256gb

Thanks,

CLe

I would without a doubt go with the 3570K since Linus just posted his 3570k vs 8350 (

). So if you do a TON of multitasking or multi-threaded programs it's your choice. For the GPU I would go ASUS GTX 660 TI (Asus fan boy right here) but the 7950 outperforms the 660TI. IMO I would go 7950. Also your PSU is way too overkill. All you need for your build is at least 450-600 watts. Here's a psu (http://tinyurl.com/b6d6bg8). The PSU has a weird blue fan or you could just a lower wattage of the NZXT Hale82, perhaps a 650-watt. It gives you some head room for upgrading.

i would change your config to this:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/JAJC

(sorry, website was being really glitchey while trying to attach link)

I upped the CPU, RAM and MOBO, i left the VIDEOCARD, SSD, and CASE alone, and lowed the PSU, and CPU COOLER, (only one step down)

you said more cores would be helpful, i have a 3820 and i have had it up as high a 4.6GHz on a NZXT Havik 120, that watercooler would be able to do the same, even though there is no "K" it still over clocks well, seen reports online of 5GHz+, no one will have any problem getting it 4.3GHz.

and your PSU was way to OP for this build.

if you need it to be cheaper then you could go to 1155 with the 3770K and Maximus V Gene

i assumed you don't need to pay for the monitor,

i think this will serve you much better, if you need it to be cheaper then you could go to 1155

i assumed you don't need to pay for the monitor,

if you need EVEN MORE CORES do this:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/JB0s

(no real gameing difference at this time)

and you lose the SSD
