If I knew how much 6800K would be posted, I'd never have posted this thread, but let's continue.

My Dad's needing a desktop to work with PowerPoint files, and multi task *heavily* (he's a VP of a enterprise cloud storage company), so more cores & ram is a must. He also wants to try some GPU accelleration.

Anyway, He's asked me to build him one, after I built mine.

We've decided to install Ubuntu, as it's a favorite of the IT guys in the company, an to save $100. Also, he needs an SFF desktop, not a tower. Here's what I came up with.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($109.99 @ Newegg)

Motherboard: MSI 760GM-P21 (FX) Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($47.98 @ SuperBiiz)

The CPU, form factor & OS is not going to change, so any suggestions?

Is 500$ your budget?

And a suggestion would be maybe more RAM? Depending how heavy of a multitasker he is.

Approximately $400

Why not go with an APU for lower power consumption. That way you can ditch the dedicated graphics card as well.

EDIT: Getting a list together for a PC that would be better.

We've decided a 6 core would be best for the purpose, He's doing quite a lot at once.

The speed of each thread does not matter to as much to him as the number of threads he can hold at once. This build also breaks budget, breaks formfactor and generally will perform slower all around win 2 less cores and a weaker GPU (he's looking into GPu acceleration)

In laymans terms: Cores over clocks.

Slim cases are horrible. You are better off with the wider form factor. Also having 4 cores at a higher clock will be better than 6 cores at a much slower clock. Plus the GPU on the 6800K will be fine if a 6670 is enough.

The 2.4 is not the final clock, I'm going to be experimenting with clock speeds to find stability, the CPU calf I just checked said the build would be fine at stock

Attention!

Before you even mention APU or Haswel, The CPU desision is FINAL.

Any post on any platform other than AM3+ will be ignored.

Any formfactor other than SLIM mATX will be ignored.

My dad used to believe his MacBook air was invincible, and able to do everything he needed, unroll now anyway.

I'm downclocking the CPU to 2.4 Ghz, which at that point it should consume 55 watts. So the 300W PSU should not be a problem.

The CPU, form factor & OS is not going to change, so any suggestions?

Listen, you're limiting your dad with the form factor. It's going to bite you and him in the ass if you do so. The PSU in that case is cheap, explosive shit. If you want him to get work done well, get this:

Finally, a VALID response.

About the case: He would really prefer a slim mATX case, to fit it flat on his desk, but other than that, It's an improvement.

Breaks budget.

I'm sorry for seeming angry, but we've decided on CPU & GPU.

I posted this thread for Case, PSU, and suggestions like that. Not a platform change!

breaks your original build by 80 dollars. I think that that is doable, seeing as how you are getting way more performance.

What's he using gpu acceleration for?

The 6800K would still be the better choice.

The 6300 and 6800k should be similar in performance with the 6800k having better single cores, 6300 having more cores, and the diminishing returns you gt as you simply add more cores.

I think a VP of a "Techie" type company would invest a little more in a computer. Just saying. Good luck :)

I wouldn't call it techy, they run servers, but everyone's running IE8 as their browser.

He also doesn't like to spend money he doesn't need to, that's why he's the VP after all.

Anyway, I did actually get a complete list together, I'm still not 100% sure about the OS, but he likes the idea of ubuntu's software center.
