New editing build

Hey im camden and I professionally edit video and need a new pc!

My editing suite benefits from both intel acceleration, ram acceleration, 

and nvidia acceleration.

Looks more like a gaming build than an editing build. that being said it should still work fine for your needs, especially at that price range. But if you're looking for a better primary editing machine for professional use, you may want to consider investing more money to get better hardware, especially a better CPU.

 

I would at the very least recommend upgrading your CPU to a 6600 or 6700 if you can afford it.

By the way looking at your other saved builds, the "Ultimate Portable Setup" isn't very good considering its 2 1080s and a 990X...

That was just to see what would be expensive there's no way I would ever afford that

Yes that's better. I don't know how much your programs benefit from GPU assistance, but you could likely get a smaller/cheaper GPU, or skip that all together and just get the i7 6700 in order to save money. or take the money you're not going to spend on a GPU and get an overclockable 6700k.

But you would know better than me what applications you're using and just how valuable having a mid-range GPU would be to you.

That screenshot tells me nothing new. maybe a screenshot of the "learn more" button would help lol. or a copy/paste of the available information. I'm not an editor myself so I don't know what help I can be to you, I simply know that this sort of professional workload tends to scale extremely well with core/thread counts. Its' also my understanding that some applications benefit from either GPU compute or CPU compute and not both at the same time. if that is the case here then investing in a single high powered CPU would likely be more beneficial than a mediocre GPU and GPU.

 

But like I said before, I don't have any experience in this field so I don't really know how to guide you to that end.

I think im gonna ditch the gpu and get a 6800k thanks for the help!

I think you need 64gb of RAM, more then 4 cores, and a 980ti. If you are a pro you should realize these things and having faster render times and not having to wait for a segment to load saves so much more then buying cheaper first off.

You can't do that. Whereas the i7 has an integrated graphics chip (the HD530) the 6800k has no such feature. You will need a GPU of some sort in order to power your display (although these GPU's can often be as cheap as 20-30 dollars). But a 6800k is definitely a step in the right direction for editing needs.

I don't know that you necessarily need all that, but he definitely has a point. If you wish to be a "professional", then having an appropriately powerful computer is a step in the right direction. But if you're just starting out, you can make these kinds of upgrades as you go.

I have been in the business for 7+ years and need to upgrade so this is why I need this pc.

that cooler would be insifficient for an overclockable 6700k. something like a Hyper 212 evo or Cryorig H7 should be about as cheap or as small as you should invest for a CPU cooler on a 6700k. and it doesn't make sense to get a geforce 210  with a 6700k as the HD530 inside the 6700k is going to be more powerful than the 210

well what is your budget then? this is one of the few times in computer building where throwing more money at your computer can be very beneficial.

 

That being said, what specs are you currently using? even an i7 6700k might be leaps and bounds over what you're currently using.

Trust me I edit videos too. As a pro you don't just get the sorta best things you take a loan out and get the best to stay ahead of the others so you can get the job and hopefully pay off the loan. I use 58gb of RAM in AE just using one effect at 1080p, so if you have Premiere open or Audition as well then your RAM is gone. Also using a GPU to render is so much faster then the CPU. A 980ti will blow a $5000 Xeon out of the water. The reason I say the 980ti is it has more Cuda cores then the 1080 and you can get them for really cheap now, $389 or less new. He also should also get proper storage, so usage of RAID and larger capacities for constant backups. A bigger SSD array in RAID would also speed up editing if used as temporary storage while editing then saved to the HDDs for the capacity factor. Also use of a NAS is key for video editing in case of hardware failure taking out the PC. I mean if he is pro you need to be serious and can't slack off on a PSU that is alright. You want something that is not going to fail and take 8 hours of work with it.

I'm a general laborer and have done many different fields of work and there is nothing more frustrating than having to work twice as hard simply because your boss didn't want to spend a couple extra bucks on the right equipment.

 

That being said he might also be the kind of guy who does this casually or part time on the weekends and doesn't need a powerhouse of a computer. as per my analogy, you don't need an entire workshop just to make a few cabinets a month. at that volume it simply doesn't make sense, even though it would definitely be much easier/better to do said work with an entire shop worth of tools at your disposal.

 

You definitely have a point. and if he can afford such things it may not be a bad idea to pull the trigger on that market. But considering his original build was an i5 6500 with a total cost of just under 600 bucks, I get the feeling your needs and his needs are in entirely different leagues.

I've been officiating hockey professionally for nearly a decade. I ref about 100-200 games a year and get paid well. That doesn't mean I'm doing the major leagues.

 

But we needn't argue the semantics of this. He knows what he needs, and can take your recommendations into consideration
