I'm not sure exactly what a sim card does and I was wondering if I take a sim card from my old phone and put it in my new phone (of course its compatible) will it work the same as if I buy a new one? Are sim cards just a thing by themselve or do they go with a phone? For example if i put it in my new phone would that mean i have a old school sim card because its a year older?

I don't know shit but i'm here anyways.

assuming its the same size and the phone you change to is carrier unlocked you can use the same sim card for the rest of your life.

it just holds your carrriers settings to connect to there network and identify your phone number etc.

ok ty, so getting a new one would not upgrade the phone, or in better words using that one would not be a downgrade assuming it was the same size ect.. its just  apart needed?

pretty much, there would be some exceptions.

u might want to change if you have an ancient sim that's 2g or 3g to use 4g in a new handset for example

but yeah it wont upgrade your phone and magically improve anything it just holds carrier/account settings and most networks have a simswap service so you can retain your old number if you ever need to change for a nano sim etc.
