Dear LTT members!

This weekend I have build myself another PC and I am running into a few strange things which I hope some of you might have some tips for so let me dive right into it!

1. Windows Update: I had some issues installing windows on my SSD it gave some formatting erros but eventually it worked, altho now Windows Update doesnt work and I am on SP1 Win7 (64bit)

2. Temps: Idle temps are arround 40 degrees, and when I run Prime95 Small FFT it INSTANT jumps to 80 and the mouse gets laggy so I suspect some thermal throttling. Why? Because also when gaming, whatever the game (GPU drivers are up to date) the game gets laggy and I suspect the CPU is throttling. Even when I manually turn the fans to 100% load the temp drops max 2degrees (they are installed in a PULL configuration on the top of the case with the stock fans).

3. fans: 3pin fans (maybe newb question sorry) are on motherboard PWM fan header but they dont light up the LED effect. Only when I change in Gigabytes software utility they light up again? is it due to 3pin vs. PWM?

Specs:

i7 6700k @ Stock

Gigabyte ga-z170m-d3h

CM Nepton 240m AIO CPU cooler

Kingston 16GB DDR4 Fury

Enermax TB Apolish Fans

CM V850 PSU

2x Kingston VSSDNOW

1x Seagate 1TB HDD

Oh, and hereby some pics of how she looks :D (hidden to not make the post too long)

Windows 10 can not be "downloaded" from the bios. You have to have a copy of it on either usb or cd and boot from that to install on new system.

If you have access to another computer you can go to here https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10 and download a tool that makes a bootable windows 10 usb for free and use that to install on your new system

Either buy a W10 license with an install USB drive, or download on another computer and create an install USB key which you will need to boot from.

I would recommend starting your own thread instead of derailing someone else's.

Formatting errors does not sound good, can you provide more details on this? Did the OS successfully activate?

It sounds like you have an issue with the CPU cooler. Either no thermal paste was used, the cooler isn't connected correctly, or the pump is faulty and it needs to be RMA'd.

Many motherboards with PWM fan control often also have an option for DC voltage control, which may automatically kick in if the motherboard detects a 3 pin fan, or is manually set. 3-pin fans can only be controlled by DC voltage control, and at lower voltages this may result in the LED's dimming. Also, some motherboards use 4-pin fan headers, but are not PWM enabled, and have DC voltage control only to save costs.

Thanks for helping stick to my topic and issue!

As for the quiestions:

1. Well when I reinstalled windows it gave an error it was formatting in the wrong format to install windows on this drive. So I formatted it from inside the Windows installation but with no success. In the end, after some reboots and actually no changes it did work and I have official version so I put in my serial code and does not give me a no activation error. So to answer you: yes I think my windows is proparly activated

2. I actually used the 'best' thermal paste from CM their Nano where in the past i only used stock paste so I was majorly dissapointed. As for mounting I can double check this part I think but I did follow manual perfectly. The pump does read out 2800RPM from the header

3. I guess I can find these settings in the BIOS perhaps or even in the Gigabyte software suit to tinker with it a bit?

I would be surprised if the OS would allow you to format the OS drive while it is running.

If you right click on your drive, and select Properties, what is shown under File System (NTFS?).

With windows update, does it give any error messages when it fails?

If the pump header is reading back it is likely working. Check the mounting, it is likely ok but it is always good to triple check.

What are your ambient temperatures? The temperatures could be normal for your current climate.

Prime95 uses AVX2 instructions which stress the CPU out beyond what most systems will normally use. Try running AIDA64 stability test, when running this it is normal for there to be lag, it should also tell you if the CPU is throttling, I think your CPU won't throttle until it hits 100°C though.

You should be able to use either BIOS or the Gigabyte software to control the fans. The problem with many LED fans is they often have to run at high speed and noisy to have good lighting.

Sorry maybe my English was too poor. This was during the installation process of Windows 7. When selecting the drive to install on it gave me this error message it was not formatted in the right way, so on the menu there it has the option to format which I did about twice and a few random reboots I tried later it suddenly gave me the option to install the OS. So obviously so I did and now that all went fine and I got windows on the drive I wanted.

Only thing now is that it does not update. Windows Update does not give me any error message, it just keeps loading and loading in search of updates but nothing. Even no forced updates on shutdown.

Check the mounting: will do this evening indeed, good tip.

Could it be also the fans in a PULL position? Shouldnt be such an effect right?

AIDA64, alright will check to download that too later (not home now at PC)

Yea I can control through BIOS and software, altho I did tweak with the settings and the fans are low RPM so full spead should not be too much of an issue but just a shame if its really neccecary. Should I perhaps consider 4pin PWM fans or should I be able to get it working on 3pins too?

Otherwise ghetto way is to do it via molex adapters but its totally not what I want as its just fixed RPM and extra cables at the back of the motherboard :(

I would try disabling windows update, restarting then re-enabling windows update to see if this fixes it.

I run all of my systems with AIO coolers in pull configuration. There is no statistical difference between push and pull, and minimal going to push-pull.

If you have high ambient temperatures, or if you have a GPU in the case putting out a lot of heat and the CPU cooler is on the outlet, if there is not enough airflow going in the CPU might be fed with too much hot air from the GPU raising the temperature.

Check your GPU temperature at idle, if it is hot then try increasing the fan speed on your intake fans, and GPU to help dissipate that heat and see if this improves CPU temperatures.

If you are wanting LED fans which stay lit at low fan speeds, I believe the Corsair ML series LED fans use PWM control and separate the LED from the fan control, using those you get constant LED illumination no matter what fan speed you run, although they have to be run on a PWM controller as DC voltage adjustment can cause damage to their bearings. They are extremely expensive (at least where I live), so I personally do not think they are worth it. If you don't care about LED fans, then any fans should work.

Ambient is about 24C and case temps readout are just 30C and GPU is very cool too so I dont think its anything to do with that. Even when I turn all fans to 100% it barely makes a difference.

Yea I do care, I choose these Enermax fans on purpose cuz of their LED effect :P

Im running AIDA64 stress test now actually as I am typing this message, And with this one the CPU temps are hitting max 70 on some cores but averaging on the 64C range, which isnt bad right and I also dont notice any throttle. Once I also engage GPU stressing some lagg and case temps rise a bit but not something crazy even,

Setup didnt change one bit so far... I will ofcourse still double check all my mounting of the CPU and such but guess my temps are "normal" then?

It is a little warmer than I would have expected for a 240mm AIO cooler at stock clock speeds, although it is within safe operation temperatures.

Thanks for the reply, guess I check some mounting in the weekend to be sure but for the rest leave it and asume its OK then!

However @ All, did anyone have a suggestion for the windows update issue?
