Problems with getting signal

Hi guys 

I am in the uk and have a sony xperia m2 aqua. Recently i have made the switch to BT mobile and have found that I have to manually select the carrier from the network providers list otherwise signal is non existant or takes ages to appear. I dont know if it is my phone or BT but my friend is also on BT with his nexus 6P and seems to get good signal everywhere. All of my network settings are set to automatic but i still have to select the network from the list. Please help as its a complete pain in the arse
