Unable to update

Hi all.

 

I'm running Windows 8.1 on my laptop and I have been since I bought it in February last year. When updating Windows through the standard Windows Update, everything was fine. However, when Windows 10 was released, and I went to claim my copy, I was unable to update to Windows 10, and since then, I have been unable to update anything on Windows 8.1.

The window either completely goes white (as shown below), freezes when i click to attempt to get to Windows Update (also shown below) or on the rare occasion in which I get to Windows Update and press the "Install Updates" button, the window again freezes.

This has been a long going problem of mine and I have attempted various solutions that I have managed to find but to no avail; any help is appreciated.

Edit: 5 mins after posting my update window has actually unfrozen which is nice, but the problem continues as it says the update has started but nothing is actually downloading.
