Cheap Server (VPN/NAS/...)

I have some questions on home Servers an I have in plan to use it for:

  1. VPN (access files from outside + avoid the restrictions from our school)
  2. NAS (I have lots of HHDs)
  3. 1 or 2 Websites
  4. (MC Server?)

The questions:

  1. Cheapest possible setup to get 1-3 (no game server)? ~100€
  2. recommended money (in EUR) to spend on a decent server (also only point 1-3)? ~150€
  3. even if it wasn't intended to, could i run a small game server (MC) on the build from 1. or 2. (for 2-3 Persons)? Yes
  4. What do I have to spend that I could run 1-4 (everything) without a problem? ~150€
  5. recommended finished builds or links to finished projects?
  6. Anything important I need to consider about servers?

As soon as one of those questions gets answered i will update it here with color so it is visible what isn't answered yet

Thanks

How many hard drives?

How many plugins/version/players do you intend to be using on the minecraft server?

you can do a VPN, NAS and a webserver on any box. although if you're running a minecraft server on top its better to get a better single preforming cpu (minecraft servers are single threaded)

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

8x 500GB (they are old so i will run a raid to get like 1TB because they will fail at some point)

vanilla MC 2-3 Players the newest version

no bukkit/spigot with plugins? pratically any cpu from 2010+ can do that. :)

do you need all 8 drives or is ~4-6 ok with you? raid card? What raid are you planning to do?

how much traffic are you getting on the website?

are you trying to start your own minecraft server to gain money?

1. ~100ish for a used xeon iirc

2. ~150? gotta consider the ram.

3. You can run all 4 on a dual core without that big of a preformance hit

4. ~150ish?

5. Used xeon, usually comes with a case, CPU, cooler and the motherboard

6. What os? windows server? linux? what distro? do you need GUI?

also, do you need a raidcard?

which distro? if you need a gui i recommend lubuntu (as it uses less resources)

command line only? centos is good from what i've heard.

well just some starter software (to help you out)

LAMP is great. (Linux, apacahe, mySQL, php)

I know you can run a nas using Simba

i dont know about the vpn

honestly, im not great at building. for now you should wait for a new response with a build, or go check our your local listings for used server hardware (usually 2010+ hardware still preforms decently and an i5 760 can run a 1.10 server with no problems)

also, you might want to post this when its prime time (~3pm UTC -6) for most NA people, for more viability.

good luck :)
