I just installed a new PSU, its a evga 500 80plus and I'm having a strange issue

My Seagate harddrive is randomly making a noise, and is not working anymore. (Worked before I installed the new PSU)

What I've tried so far: making sure hard drive cables are plugged in and going into BIOS with no hard drive being shown.

Here is a video of what's happening.

Do you have a modular or semi-modular PSU? Also, have you checked if the SATA data cable goes into the motherboard and tried other SATA ports?

The PSU is not modular, and I have done both those 2 steps but I'm getting the same problem.

Unfortunatly No. I don't think it will work otherwise since the HDD makes a sound before shutting down.

Most likely a problem with the HDD then, try it in a different Pc if you can or take it to a shop for them to look at it.

To be clear, is the drive making a clicking noise that it was not making before?

If so, $100 says it's hard drive failure. I would highly advise UNPLUGGING THE DRIVE NOW if you have data you want to potentially recover.

Take it to a computer shop if you're not familiar with the process of attempting data recovery, or if you are, fire up something like PartedMagic or GParted to see if it will detect the drive and then save your data.

*parted magic link is an affiliate link, however, as a computer technician i fully swear by this tool as a first stop for general stress testing, partition editing, and data recovery.

Hi @GamingDevilsCC!

Unfortunately, it's a bad sign when the HDD doesn't appear in BIOS at all - it means that the PC is not recognizing the unit. So at this point you may try to plug it in another computer if you want, like mckendry1011 suggested, and if it's not showing there it will be best to look for a replacement unit, or if the hard disk is still under warranty - to contact the manufacturer support and RMA it so you can get a new unit.

On the other hand, if you have important information you want to retrieve, you can try to extract it with some software, but IMO it will be better to consult with a data recovery specialist and see if he/she will be able to help you get the data back. Usually the manufacturers have data recovery partners listed in their official website, so you can check there and see if there is one near you. For instance, here are the WD partners:

Hope this helps and best of luck!
